The Appeal of Korean Meal Kits

Korean cooking can feel intimidating if you are starting from scratch. The ingredient lists are long, the pastes and sauces are unfamiliar, and getting the balance of flavours right takes practice. Meal kits solve the sourcing problem — everything comes pre-measured and ready to combine — though they vary enormously in how much actual cooking they require and how authentic the results taste.

02

Bibigo Bulgogi Kit

CJ Bibigo's bulgogi kit includes a pre-made marinade sauce that you combine with thinly sliced beef (you supply the meat). The sauce is well balanced — soy, garlic, pear, and sesame — and produces results that taste genuinely close to restaurant bulgogi. The kit is designed for about two servings and the whole process takes under twenty minutes. The main limitation is that you need to source the beef yourself, and proper bulgogi requires very thinly sliced sirloin or rib eye. Ask your butcher to slice it thin, or partially freeze the meat and cut it yourself.

03

Jongga Kimchi Jjigae Kit

This kit takes a different approach — it provides aged kimchi and a seasoning base, and you add tofu, pork, and water. The kimchi is properly fermented and sour, which is essential for a good jjigae. The resulting stew is surprisingly authentic and deeply flavourful. It is the least convenient of the three (you need to supply several fresh ingredients), but it produces the most satisfying meal. At under seven pounds, it is also good value. The downside is that it only makes one portion, so you would need two kits for a pair.

05

Sempio BBQ Sauce Kit

Sempio's offering is the simplest of the three — it is essentially a barbecue sauce in a pouch that you use to marinate and cook any protein. The flavour profile is sweet and savoury with ginger and garlic notes. It works well on chicken thighs and pork belly as well as beef. It is more of a sauce than a complete kit, but at six pounds it is a low-commitment entry point for anyone curious about Korean flavours without wanting to invest in a full pantry of ingredients.

The Verdict

For authenticity, the Jongga kimchi jjigae kit is the clear winner — it produces a proper Korean stew that would not be out of place in a Seoul neighbourhood restaurant. The Bibigo bulgogi kit wins on convenience and broad appeal. The Sempio sauce is best for casual experimentation. None of these fully replaces learning to cook Korean food from scratch, but they are a solid stepping stone and a useful fallback for busy weeknights.
