ICONIC's Design Position in Korean Stationery

Korean stationery brands cluster at either end of the market: there are the high-volume mass-market names like Monami and Morning Glory, and there are the design-led premium imports people order directly from Korea because they can find them nowhere else. ICONIC sits in the space between those two camps and has done well there.

The brand launched in 2012 and built its initial following on two things: notebooks with better-than-expected paper, and a restrained visual identity that avoided the character-heavy or pastel-heavy aesthetic that dominated Korean stationery at the time. Their covers tend to use muted solids, clean typography, and minimal decoration. The effect is a notebook that looks serious enough to use in a work meeting and styled enough to post on a desk setup.

02

That positioning has held. ICONIC is now one of the most-mentioned Korean stationery brands in bullet journal communities outside Korea, partly because the product genuinely performs and partly because the aesthetic translates well to a Western audience that did not grow up with the brand's cultural context.

The Numo and Basic Ranges Explained

ICONIC's notebook range divides primarily into two lines.

The Numo range is their flagship. It uses a heavier paper stock — 80gsm is the standard — and comes in dotted, lined, and blank variants. The dotted version is the most popular among journalers. The dot spacing is 4mm, which is tighter than the 5mm standard you find in Leuchtturm1917 or Rhodia notebooks. That tighter grid suits smaller handwriting and enables more detail in spreads, though it can feel cramped to people whose handwriting runs large.

05

The Basic range uses a lighter paper and prioritises volume over weight. It is designed as an everyday notebook rather than a journaling object — the kind of thing you carry in a bag and fill with meeting notes rather than monthly spreads. At a lower price point, the Basic is the practical choice for writers who go through notebooks quickly.

Both ranges use a stitched binding that allows the notebook to open flat on a desk. Pages do not curl or resist. This is a small thing that matters significantly over the course of writing a full notebook.

Paper Weight and Fountain-Pen Behaviour

The question that comes up most often about ICONIC notebooks, particularly among the journaling community, is how the paper handles fountain pen ink. The answer is encouraging but nuanced.

On the Numo 80gsm paper, a medium nib with a standard water-based fountain pen ink (Pilot Iroshizuku, Diamine, Waterman) produces minimal feathering and acceptable show-through. On the Basic's lighter paper, feathering increases noticeably with wetter inks, and show-through on the reverse side is enough to disrupt reading on both pages. The Numo is a fountain-pen-viable notebook at a mid-range price; the Basic is not.

Gel pens write well on both. Fine liners and ballpoints work without issue across the whole range.

ICONIC Stickers and Accessory Ecosystem

ICONIC has developed a broader accessory range around their notebooks. Their sticker packs have become a standalone product — sold in assorted sets of 200 or more sheets covering calendar labels, habit trackers, mood trackers, and purely decorative elements. The sticker paper is slightly thicker than most Korean sticker products, which makes repositioning easier and reduces the chance of tearing during application.

They also produce functional accessories: page flags, sticky note sets, and a range of desk organisers that use the same muted colour palette as the notebooks. None of these are essential, but they appeal to people who want a visually consistent desk setup without the investment of premium brands.

14

The ecosystem approach means ICONIC products photograph well together — a practical advantage for anyone who shares their desk setup online, and a reason the brand has gained a following beyond the people who buy stationery primarily to use it.

Buying in the UK: Where Stocks Are Honest

ICONIC notebooks are not widely stocked in UK physical shops. YesStyle is the most reliable UK-accessible source for the Numo and Basic ranges. CultPens has stocked ICONIC occasionally but their listings can be patchy — check the date on any listing before ordering to avoid disappointment with out-of-stock items.

Direct import via Korean forwarding services is an option for buyers who want access to the full ICONIC range including limited-edition covers, but the per-notebook cost with shipping usually exceeds what YesStyle charges for standard editions.

16

Amazon UK has ICONIC products listed through third-party sellers, but quality control is inconsistent — some sellers list the wrong variant or ship products with damaged covers. YesStyle's own-brand fulfilment tends to be more careful.

FAQ

Is ICONIC a Korean brand or Japanese? ICONIC is a Korean brand, founded in Seoul. The name and visual identity read as international rather than specifically Korean, which has contributed to some confusion online, but the brand's origins and manufacturing are Korean.

How does the ICONIC Numo compare to a Leuchtturm1917? The Leuchtturm uses 80gsm paper with a 5mm dot grid; the ICONIC Numo uses 80gsm paper with a 4mm dot grid. Both open flat. The Leuchtturm has a larger page count in its A5 edition (249 pages versus 160). ICONIC is generally cheaper on YesStyle than a UK-priced Leuchtturm. Paper feel is comparable.

18

Do ICONIC notebooks have numbered pages? Some editions do and some do not — it varies by range and print run. The Numo range typically has page numbers printed in the bottom corner. Check the product description on YesStyle before ordering if numbered pages matter to you.

19

Are the sticker packs repositionable? They are light-adhesive rather than standard sticker adhesive, which means they can be moved once or twice before losing their stick. They are not truly repositionable in the way that sticky notes are.
