IPL Basics: Not Laser, Similar but Different

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and laser hair removal both use light energy to damage hair follicles and reduce regrowth. They are not the same technology, though the practical outcome — reduced hair density after repeated sessions — is similar.

Laser hair removal uses a single, coherent wavelength of light. The energy is concentrated and highly controlled, which is why professional laser devices can treat darker skin tones more safely. Diode lasers at 808nm and Nd:YAG lasers at 1064nm are the professional clinic standards.

02

IPL devices use broad-spectrum light (typically 475-1200nm) filtered to remove wavelengths that would damage skin. The broad spectrum means the device is less precise than a laser. The energy is absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle, which heats and damages the follicle. Broad-spectrum light also means the device must be used more carefully on darker skin tones, where skin melanin competes with hair melanin for light absorption.

03

Home IPL devices are lower power than clinic devices. This is intentional — clinic devices treat in 3-6 sessions of very high-power treatment; home devices treat over 8-12 sessions at lower power, reducing risk from the lower-power envelope. The cumulative effect over multiple sessions produces equivalent hair reduction for appropriate candidates.

Korean Entrants: Ulike and the Competitive Landscape

Ulike is a Chinese-Korean consumer electronics brand that has moved aggressively into the IPL market. The Air 3 device, their current flagship, uses what Ulike calls "Sapphire Ice-Cooling" technology — a sapphire crystal window that contacts the skin during treatment and provides a cooling effect that reduces the discomfort of IPL flashes.

The cooling contact technology is not unique to Ulike — Philips uses it in some models — but Ulike's aggressive marketing and pricing has made them one of the fastest-growing IPL brands globally. The Air 3 competes directly with Philips Lumea and Braun Silk-expert at a lower price point, and independent reviews have generally found it performs competitively with both.

Ulike's positioning is explicitly Korean-adjacent in their marketing (the brand's visual language draws on K-beauty aesthetics), though the company is based in China. For UK buyers, the practical distinction is in warranty and support: Philips and Braun have established UK service networks; Ulike provides support through Amazon returns and their own customer service channel.

Skin-Tone and Hair-Colour Compatibility

IPL and laser hair removal share two important compatibility constraints.

Skin tone: IPL devices are generally safe for Fitzpatrick skin tones I-IV (very fair to medium brown). At tone V and VI (dark brown to very dark), the skin melanin absorbs too much of the IPL energy, creating a risk of burns and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The Ulike Air 3, Philips Lumea, and Braun Silk-expert all include a skin tone sensor that prevents the device from firing if the skin tone is outside the safe range.

11

Hair colour: IPL targets melanin in the hair follicle. White, grey, blonde, and red hair contains little pigment, meaning the device cannot reliably target the follicle. IPL is most effective on dark brown to black hair. Lighter brown hair produces reduced results. Blonde and red hair may see minimal results. White and grey hair is not treatable with IPL.

This combination of constraints means IPL is most effective on people with light skin and dark hair — a demographic represented strongly in East Asian populations (including Korean), which partially explains the Korean market's high adoption of IPL devices.

UK Availability: Boots and Selfridges

All three devices in this review are available through Amazon UK. Philips Lumea is additionally stocked at Boots and John Lewis. The Braun Silk-expert is available at Boots, John Lewis, and Argos. Ulike is primarily an online-only purchase in the UK, through Amazon or the brand's own website.

Boots in particular has a strong IPL section and runs frequent promotions. Buying from Boots or John Lewis rather than Amazon provides a stronger UK consumer return policy for high-value electronics.

15

Selfridges and Harvey Nichols stock Philips Lumea in their beauty technology sections. These are useful if you want to handle the device before purchasing.

Six-Month Realistic Commitment

IPL hair removal is a sustained protocol, not a treatment with immediate permanent results. The realistic timeline:

Weeks 1-12: weekly sessions. Hair in the treated area begins reducing at weeks 4-6. Some areas (bikini line, underarms) respond faster than others (legs, forearms).

17

Weeks 12-24: two-weekly sessions as hair density reduces and treatment response stabilises.

18

Months 6-12: monthly maintenance sessions to treat any follicles that have returned to the growth phase.

19

After 12 months of this protocol, most users achieve 70-90% reduction in hair density in treated areas. Full permanent removal is not guaranteed by home IPL devices. Some follicles will always regrow and require ongoing maintenance.

20

The commitment is both in time and in consistency. Skipping sessions, particularly in the first 12 weeks, significantly reduces effectiveness because the treatment targets hairs in the anagen (growth) phase — any missed session allows treated follicles to recover and untreated follicles to continue their natural cycle.

21

Contraindications: do not use over tattoos — the pigment absorbs energy and can cause burns. Do not use on tanned skin. Do not use during pregnancy. Do not use near the eyes. Do not use if you take photosensitive medications. Consult a doctor if you have a history of skin cancer in the treatment area.

FAQ

Is the Ulike Air 3 better than the Philips Lumea at the same price? At comparable prices (Ulike often costs less), the performance difference between the two is marginal based on independent testing. Philips has a longer market track record and more published clinical data. Ulike's ice-cooling contact is a genuine comfort improvement. For first-time IPL buyers, either is a reasonable choice; Philips provides stronger UK consumer support.

How many flashes does an IPL device need for a full body treatment programme? A full body programme over 12 months uses approximately 100,000-150,000 flashes. All three devices in this review (250,000-400,000 flashes) have sufficient capacity for several years of full-body use before needing replacement.

23

Can I use IPL if I have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)? IPL can reduce hair density in PCOS-related hair growth, but hormonal stimulation means new follicles continue to activate. Maintenance sessions are typically needed more frequently for hormonally driven hair growth. Many people with PCOS find IPL reduces the burden significantly even if it does not eliminate hair growth entirely.

24

Is home IPL effective for facial hair? Yes, with important caveats: do not use on or near the eyebrows without an attachment designed for that purpose. Do not use on or around the upper lip if you are not certain of your skin tone compatibility — the upper lip is sensitive. Many devices include a facial attachment with a smaller treatment window for more precise application.
