Propolis in Skincare
Propolis is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and intensely nourishing. Korean brands have turned this bee-derived ingredient into some of the most effective products for dull, damaged skin.
What Is Propolis?
Propolis is a resinous substance that bees collect from tree buds and sap flows, which they then mix with beeswax and enzymes to create a protective coating for their hives. It functions as the hive's immune system — it is antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal. Bees use it to seal gaps, sterilise the hive, and protect against pathogens.
In skincare, propolis brings those same protective properties. It contains over 300 identified compounds including flavonoids (powerful antioxidants), phenolic acids, terpenes, and amino acids. The specific composition varies depending on what plants the bees had access to, which is why Korean propolis products often specify the botanical source.
The Skincare Benefits
Antibacterial Properties
Propolis has been shown to inhibit the growth of P. acnes, the bacterium responsible for inflammatory acne. Unlike benzoyl peroxide, it does this without drying the skin or causing irritation. This makes it an excellent ingredient for acne-prone skin that is also sensitive or dehydrated.Anti-inflammatory Action
The flavonoids in propolis reduce inflammation at a cellular level. This is beneficial for acne, rosacea, eczema, and general skin redness. Studies have shown that propolis reduces the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, essentially calming the skin's inflammatory response from the inside.Skin Healing and Nourishment
Propolis accelerates wound healing and supports collagen production. This makes it valuable for post-acne scarring, barrier repair, and general skin recovery. The amino acids provide building blocks for skin repair whilst the antioxidants protect against environmental damage. How Korean Brands Use Propolis
The COSRX Full Fit Propolis Light Ampoule is the benchmark product. At 73.5% black bee propolis extract, it delivers a concentrated dose in a lightweight, fast-absorbing formula. It has a slightly golden colour and a honey-like viscosity that feels luxurious without being heavy. It works for virtually every skin type and concern.
Skinfood's Royal Honey Propolis Essence combines propolis with royal jelly and honey for a triple-threat nourishing formula. It is richer than the COSRX ampoule and better suited for dry or mature skin that needs intensive nourishment alongside the antibacterial benefits.
Is Propolis Vegan?
No. Propolis is a bee product and is not vegan. If you are looking for similar benefits from plant-based sources, bakuchiol offers antioxidant properties, whilst tea tree and centella provide antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the specific combination of benefits that propolis offers is difficult to replicate exactly with a single plant ingredient.
How to Incorporate Propolis
Use propolis products after toner and before heavier moisturisers. The ampoule or essence format works as a treatment step. You can also use a propolis sheet mask once a week for an intensive treatment. Propolis plays well with most other ingredients — it does not conflict with acids, retinoids, or vitamin C, making it one of the easiest actives to add to any existing routine.
